Mastering natural lighting in interior rendering
Since I started working in this field, I’ve created hundreds of interior renders and picked up plenty of information along the way on how to actually make them work. I learned to plan the workflow even before touching a single tool, figured out the most common mistakes and how to dodge them, and ran countless experiments, both technical and aesthetic, that led to little tricks to speed up the process. All of this experience, whether I liked it or not, gave me a skill that’s now very useful: predicting how light will behave based on the scene’s layout. Once you get this down, you don’t need to blindly tweak settings hoping for a good result. You’ll know exactly what to do to get a great result.





Clients and students in my online and live courses have more or less always liked my workflow and my output renders, and a question I get all the time in my courses is exactly what inspired this post.

Is It Really Possible to get a great rendering
using Corona Sky and Sun only?
In this post, I’m answering this question, an answer that, for me, only came after years of hands-on experience. I’ll walk you through a series of examples and explain the key things to know for creating a strong image, both aesthetically and technically, drawing entirely from my personal experience.

For a beginner struggling to get good results or just starting out without a solid grasp of how a rendering engine works, it might look like creating renders like these involves a ridiculously complex setup.
When I was a beginner myself, seeing images like these, I would have imagined a maze of lights: portals, window lights, invisible sources in corners to create accents or reflections… and a bunch of other tricks impossible to spot just by looking at the final image. How does the artist decide the number of lights, their placement, intensity, or size?


These images come from scenes where the only light sources were Corona Sky and Corona Sun. Light is just one ingredient in the recipe, though. To make truly beautiful interior renders using a seemingly simple light source like natural sunlight, you also have to put a lot of thought into the image design itself.
What is image design
Working on image design means:
- Spending time finding the best camera position
so every element falls in the right place and the frame feels balanced. - Picking the right camera height from the floor
to give the viewer a relaxed, natural perspective. - Choosing the focal length that fits the type of shot
wide angles for an overview, tighter lenses for details. - Using depth of field to boost realism
and guide the viewer’s eye toward the subject. - Deciding on the right image format based on the subject
landscape and portrait formats each tell a different story. - Selecting the perspective that matches the tone you want
frontal for a clean, elegant look; angled for something more casual and natural. - Giving light the right direction and softness
and shadows the right density and smoothness. - Developing the image for a natural look
balancing exposure, contrast, and saturation, and avoiding blown-out highlights. - Adding backgrounds through windows that look believable
no wrong perspectives, and neither too dark nor too bright. - Applying the basics of interior design

Use this checklist while building your images and make sure you’ve thought of everything.
This is the knowledge that is truly worth your time. The way you master these points is what separates a beginner’s render from a pro’s one. And you don’t get there by playing with render settings—especially if you’re working with Corona, where there aren’t that many anyway. You get there by studying the essentials: photography, composition, color theory, storytelling, and interior design.
Creating a good image isn’t just about render settings. You first need to understand what actually makes an image beautiful. Too often, people lose sight of that and get lost in render settings or chasing quick fixes. Downloading packs of ultra-HD textures, piling on overly complex materials, or buying online courses that promise instant success after two hours—none of that will get you anywhere. It’ll only waste your time and money.
Where to start?
With a good 3D model
It may sound obvious, but if you want to create interior renders that really work, you first need to know a few fundamentals about creating your 3D model—and follow some key best practices.
- Always follow real-world scale
If the geometry isn’t built at real-world scale, your lighting simulation will never be quite right. - The space needs to be fully enclosed
Don’t delete walls or sneak in invisible lights or your render will instantly look fake. - Window Glass can be turned off
Since exterior backgrounds usually get overexposed, your render won’t look much different with or without window glass - Keep your file organized
Rename and group objects properly. A messy file almost always leads to a messy image.
Does your 3D model follow these four rules?
Size Matters
About real world scale
Using a real-world scale 3d model is more important than you might think. Corona (like most render engines) creates an image by simulating how light would actually move through a real space. To do this, it shoots out a certain number of “virtual photons”, which behave like real light particles. The number of photons depends on the size of the space so if your model isn’t to scale, the simulation won’t be accurate.
Think of it this way: light in Corona behaves a lot like water. Pour a little water from a bottle into a glass, and the stream looks smooth and simple. Watch a waterfall, and the water is still moving from a higher point to a lower one, but the flow looks completely different because the number of particles involved is way larger.


Now imagine your 3D model is out of scale — say, much smaller than it should be. The simulation will be calculated with the wrong number of particles, and the result won’t match what you’d expect in the real world. The render will end up looking more like a scale model photo than a full-sized space. The same thing happens in the opposite case: if your model is oversized, say 30 or 300 meters floor to ceiling instead of 3, the render will once again look off, because the simulation won’t line up with reality.
Of course, you don’t need to model everything in real world scale from the very first click. In the early stages, you can work more loosely and ignore exact measurements. The key is to check that your model is properly scaled before hitting render. Personally, when I’m modeling something really small, I actually work out of scale on purpose. It just makes it easier to move around and apply commands.
From Darkness to Realism
How to Get Good Lighting Without Cheating
When you’re just starting out with interior renders, lighting is usually the biggest challenge. Chances are, your first images will come out dark, flat, and underlit. That’s normal. Most rooms don’t have massive floor-to-ceiling windows, and smaller openings let in less light.
This is the point where beginners (me included, back in the day) start looking for shortcuts. Typical thoughts:
“I’ll just delete the wall behind the camera
so more light gets in. If it’s not visible, who cares?”
Wrong. Even removing small objects changes the way light moves through a room. Knocking down walls or ceilings just because they’re not in frame will flood the space with light in a way that looks completely fake. And if it’s the wall behind the camera? That’s the worst case. You’ll end up with a flat, lifeless image. Never remove walls for extra light.


“I’ll stick an invisible omni light
in the middle of the room. Problem solved!”
Wrong. Dropping invisible lights in random places usually makes the scene look flat and fake. The classic mistake is putting a big omni light right in the center — everything turns fake instantly. Filling dark corners with extra lights just clutters your file and makes things look fake. To be clear: sometimes it is smart to add subtle fill lights off-camera to brighten shadows or create reflections on glass and metal, but that comes later, once you know what you’re doing.
“If my render’s too dark,
no worries: I’ll fix it in Photoshop!”
Wrong. Photoshop is powerful, but it can’t perform miracles. You can tweak exposure, boost contrast, shift color. But if the base lighting is wrong, you can’t magically turn it into good lighting afterward.
The best approach is to build your scene the way it really is. No fake openings, no invisible lights. Make sure every wall and corner is properly sealed so light doesn’t leak through modeling gaps and create weird glowing lines.



And yes, your first render will probably look dark. That’s fine. All you need to do is raise the camera exposure, fix overexposed areas, and adjust contrast. The result will be properly exposed, bright in the right way, and naturally balanced.
Below you can see the four stages of image development:
1. raw render, 2. exposure adjustment, 3. highlight compression, 4. contrast adjustment.
The final result isn’t dark anymore, it’s well exposed, pleasantly bright, and balanced.
The thing is, beginners often don’t really understand how light perception and exposure work. They keep exposure low, then chase other tricks to brighten the image, because they think “that’s how it’s done.” But that only leads to random results, frustration, and the feeling that rendering is stressful, exhausting, and maybe not worth it. The truth is, once you learn the basics, it all gets much more logical and a lot more fun.
Window Glass and Burnouts
Why to Hide Glass in Your Render
If your goal is to learn how to create natural daylight interior renders, you must train your eyes on real interior photography. Interior photos will always be your best reference. The one below, for example, is a beautiful Scandinavian-style interior photo.

Now, focus on the windows. Notice how hard it is to actually see the window glass: the outside is so bright it wipes out any reflections or clues that glass is even there. In photography, when an area is overwhelmingly bright, we call it overexposed. It basically means the exposure was set so high (relative to the “correct” value) that the camera turned everything into a white patch.
Sometimes overexposure is a mistake — when it looks unpleasant or ruins the photo. But in an interior shot like this, the overexposed exterior is neither wrong nor distracting. In fact, we’re so used to seeing it that way in interior photography it actually feels natural.
Why does this happen?
Because to capture the light inside the room correctly, the photographer has to expose for the interior. That means ignoring the brighter exterior and focusing on the interior light balance. The result: a bright, welcoming indoor shot, but an exterior that’s overexposed.
This is why in daylight interior renderings (not nighttime — then it’s better to keep glass visible), you can actually hide or remove the window glass. In the final render, it won’t show up anyway because of the burn-out exterior. Light will flow more freely into the space and will give your renderer fewer calculations to worry about.
“All fine, but my client
wants to see a blue sky, not white.”
You might be asking yourself: “Is it really okay for the exterior to stay that bright? Isn’t that wrong? My clients always ask me to ‘fix it’ so they can see a blue sky.”
The photos here (by Angelo Talia), especially the one on the right, prove that exterior burn-out are completely normal in interior photography.
That said, you need to understand why a client asks to see a properly exposed exterior. Not because they know nothing about photography, but because the human eye works differently: we can process multiple light levels at once, so when the image reaches our brain, we perceive both interior and exterior as properly exposed. That’s why, on an intuitive or aesthetic level, a pure white exterior can look wrong, odd, abstract.
My advice? Try to educate your client. Show them examples, explain why overexposure happens, and if possible, get them on board with a more photographic look.

There are situations where this request makes perfect sense. For example, when both the interior and exterior view are critical to the image’s purpose.
Take the bedroom in these photos: it’s a BnB in Rome with a great view of St. Peter’s Dome. If I were delivering an image like this to the client, overexposing the exterior would be a mistake: you’d lose the view on the dome, that is the most valuable selling point of this room. On the other hand, underexposing to show the dome clearly would make the interior look dark and unwelcoming.


The solution? Blend two exposures into one composite.

Is it 100% realistic? No. Will purist photographers disagree? Probably. But this image does the job: it highlights both the cozy interior and the iconic view, showing the real value of the space in one shot.
Clear files, clear mind
Groups won’t affect the light
but it will make your work easier
Anyone who knows me personally is aware that in certain situations I’m a bit of a neat freak. And the way I organize my scene files is definitely one of those situations. By renaming and grouping objects according to the same logic every time, I can usually find what I need very quickly, just by using the search bar in the Cinema 4D Object Manager. That’s why I see it as a real advantage, not as some obsessive habit. A clean file makes the work easier and way less stressful.
Here’s how I like to structure things:
- CAMERAS
At the top of the list, I keep Cameras, renamed based on what they frame
(e.g., “Camera 01 – living”, “Camera 05 – kitchen detail”). - LIGHTS
In the second section, I place all the Lights
(Corona Sun, Corona Sky, any additional lights tied to lamp models). - 3D MODEL
At the bottom, I group the 3D model parts, divided into Structure (walls, floors, ceilings, pillars — basically the architecture) and Furniture, organized by room (living, kitchen, bathroom…) and by type (main furniture, decor, accessories).

Of course, you don’t need to organize your file exactly like this: the way light behaves has nothing to do with it. If your Object Manager is a total mess and everything is named randomly, the light will still work the same. But if you’re reading this post all the way to this point, it probably means you trust my experience at least a little. So trust me on this too: take five minutes to clean up your file and rename your elements. It might feel unnecessary, but it makes a huge difference in how focused, calm, and clear-headed you’ll stay throughout the entire rendering process.
Choosing the Right Furniture
Understanding the Basics of Interior Design
I never studied to become an interior designer. Everything I know about this field I learned through experience, by reading a few books, browsing countless magazines, and talking to people more knowledgeable than me throughout these years of work.
Interior design is a vast discipline, but there are some basic principles you can apply in a very practical way while working on your scene (one of them was already implied in the previous part on file organization). In my case, these principles have been incredibly helpful in developing a stylistic logic when selecting the furniture pieces to include in my images.

The Cosmos Browser and all the websites where you can download 3D models are a helpful resource. But the huge availability of 3d models of every type, style, era, and size also has a downside: there’s just too much choice. And when you don’t know what to choose, you often end up picking furniture and accessories at random, maybe going for the “best 3d models”, and they don’t always work well together.
When thinking how to set up your scene, it’s best to start by choosing a style (Scandinavian, minimal, vintage, etc.) and then stick to models that belong to that style, in quantity, type, color, and material, without straying too far and always following the basic rules of interior design.


The word style is used in fashion, music, dance, sports, car design, and many other fields. In interior design, style refers to the set of choices an interior designer makes while developing a project. Together, these choices give a space a specific identity, a personality that makes it stand out from the rest.
When you look at a photo of an interior you don’t really need experience to tell the difference between a good design that feels balanced and one that looks rushed and without a style. What’s not easy is understanding why certain combinations of colors, furniture, or finishes work so well together, even if they come from different eras or geographical areas. And if you don’t understand the reasons behind that balance, it’s very hard to make the right choices in your own project.


Interior design is a very broad subject, but there are a few simple tips that can help us take the first steps in the right way, and learn how to create compositions that don’t feel improvised.

3 object categories
for realistic interiors
Toward the end of a project, I often catch myself staring at my render thinking: “Should I add more stuff to fill the space? Or maybe it already feels too cluttered and I should take something out?” There’s no universal answer, it depends on the space, but a simple framework helps: a good interior scene usually balances objects across these three categories:
- Main furniture pieces – large items with strong personality
(sofas, armchairs, rugs, dining tables, chandeliers, chairs, big cabinets) - Secondary elements – supportive but noticeable
(floor lamps, coffee tables, stools, indoor plants, curtains, smaller furniture)
- Accessories & decorations – the final layer that makes it personal
(books, flowers, art, cushions, little plants, switches, outlets, decorative objects)
The main furniture is always the starting point, and everything else revolves around it. The risk, however, is going overboard or keeping it too minimal. My rule of thumb? Pick 4–5 hero pieces, no more.
Once the heroes are in place, don’t leave them lonely. Pair them with the right secondary elements before you even think about decorations. If you only pile on accessories, the scene will feel empty and unbalanced, like the furniture was dropped in without context.
And if your scene stops at furniture + accents, but has no accessories, the space will look unfinished, like it’s waiting for someone to actually move in. That’s where books, flowers, artwork, and other details come in and tell the story of the people living there.
These storytelling pieces are often more powerful than the main furniture. That’s why I spend time designing custom book covers or carefully picking art, instead of relying on the same overused black-and-white architecture books you’ve seen in a thousand renders.
Of course, this has little to do with natural light but let’s be honest: no amount of sunlight will save a poorly furnished scene.
Light and Framing
How to place the camera
to get the best light
Back to the main question this post is meant to answer: is it really possible to create realistic and comfortable interior renders using only natural light? The first part of the answer is: yes, if you have a good 3D model. But that’s not enough: the camera also needs to be placed smartly in relation to where the light is coming from. But what does “placed smartly” mean?
To get a good lighting, with depth and contrast, objects and spaces in your image should have one side in light and the other in shadow. That’s what makes them feel dimensional. So, when placing the camera in your scene, the first step is to understand where the light is coming from and how it travels through the space, then choose a position that creates a good contrast, with a balance of light and shadows.
1. Light coming from behind the camera
If the light is coming from behind the camera, everything in front of you will be evenly lit, which can easily look flat and lifeless. That’s why it’s harder (though not impossible) to create an image with a good contrast this way.

In this case, for example, to avoid a flat result, you can place a curtain in front of the window (to diffuse and reduce the incoming light), lower the sun toward sunset and angle it so that it creates a diagonal line of light across the space (to add movement to the composition). You can also add a few small/artificial light sources around the room to generate areas of micro-contrast.

Small choices like a half-open entrance door (letting light spill in from another room), a sliding bathroom door slightly ajar, a blanket casually moved, and rich patterns in the materials all help create interest and detail—making up for the missing of a stronger “Caravaggesque” light.
2. Full controluce
If the light is coming from in front of the camera, everything in the frame will fall into shadow, making it just as tricky to create depth. “Controluce” is a challenge even for experienced photographers: the light is intense, but lowering the exposure to avoid clipping often leaves the rest of the image too dark.

The same strategies as before can help here, but sometimes they’re not enough. One useful trick is to render the same image at two different exposures and blend them in post-production—similar to the BnB bedroom example I mentioned earlier.
Another solution is to add (if possible) extra openings to the side, outside the camera view, to let in just a touch of additional natural light. This can greatly improve the contrast and prevent areas (like the foreground) from looking flat.

3. Quasi controluce
This isn’t a true Controluce, because the camera isn’t perfectly perpendicular to the wall opposite. Instead, it’s placed in a corner and points toward the opposite one. Let’s call it “quasi controluce.”

Here you can see the Scandinavian interior I showed earlier, with a diagram of the camera position and light direction.

In my humble opinion, this is where the most interesting results come from. It’s easier to handle than full controluce, yet not as predictable or obvious as having the light coming straight from the side. This is the setup I go for many of my images: it often works beautifully right away, the perspective feels natural and unforced, the near-frontal light gives room for Bloom&Glare effects that add poetry, and the windows can show a background that expands the scene, like a garden view, that makes the space feel more real.
4. Light from one side
Another effective setup is placing the camera perpendicular to the wall in front and letting the light come from one side. This is easy to manage and very popular with beginners.

In the example below, the camera faces the wall straight on, the perspective is perfectly symmetrical, and all verticals and horizontals are strictly aligned. The light comes from the left.

The result is undeniably strong, with a striking contrast between light and shadow — a true “Caravaggesque” effect, reminiscent of Caravaggio’s paintings, where he often used this type of lighting to divide scenes into light and darkness, creating works that still feel incredibly realistic and dramatic.

That said, for today’s interior rendering, I find this setup a bit too academic and predictable. Whenever possible, I prefer going for quasi controluce or even full controluce.
Two Perspectives, Two Styles
Elegant VS Casual
As said in the previous part, depending on where you place the camera, you can get two different types of framing: if the camera is perfectly perpendicular to the wall in front, the perspective will be frontal/central, and all vertical and horizontal lines in the image will be straight and parallel. If instead the camera is placed in a corner of the room and looks toward the opposite corner, the perspective will be casual (or diagonal).


Which one should you choose? It depends both on the “anatomy” of the subject you’re framing and on the feeling you want the image to convey. Frontal perspectives give a more serious and elegant feel, while casual perspectives feel less calculated and more spontaneous. A frontal perspective works especially well in spaces or with subjects that are already formal and solemn by nature; casual perspectives, on the other hand, tell the story of the space in a more natural, approachable language, addressing the viewer with a friendlier tone.


Both solutions work very well for interior renders. For this reason, when creating a series of images from the same scene, it’s always a good idea to include both frontal and casual perspectives. That way, when your audience browses through your images, they won’t quickly grow bored. Relying too heavily on the same type of framing can make your portfolio feel repetitive and somewhat predictable.


Also think about this: when you’re at home moving from one room to another, you rarely move in a “robotic” direction, always parallel or perpendicular to the walls around you, like a rook in a chess game. In our daily routine, we move freely through our spaces, often cutting diagonally across rooms without even noticing it. That means that most of the time, the perspective we naturally experience with our eyes is a casual one — the one we’re most familiar with, and therefore the one that feels most natural.
The Human Point of View
At What Height Should You Place
the Camera in Interior Renders?
In 2002 I began studying Architecture at RomaTRE University in Rome, where most final projects were explained with technical drawings: plans, sections, elevations, and sometimes perspectives — some still done by hand, even though renders and 3d models were already emerging. When dealing with perspectives, my teachers consistently advised an eye level point of view: the viewpoint of someone about 1.70–1.80 meters tall, standing on the ground or floor (the street, the sidewalk, or the floor (if it was an interior). The purpose was to show the building or space as people would truly experience it, and I still think that is very sound advice.

Later, when I started working and my career led me to create more interior renders than exterior ones, I realized that placing the camera at 1.80 meters inside a room didn’t always means the best results. In my experience, the most successful renders — “successful” meaning the ones I personally like the most and that my clients respond to best — happen when I place the camera lower, between 80–90 centimeters and one meter, or at most 1.20–1.50 meters from the floor.

There’s also a psychological reason behind this: the perspective we see when standing is different from the one we have when sitting, because our eyes are at a higher or lower level. Placing the camera lower creates a perspective that feels closer to what we see when we’re seated and relaxed. This naturally puts the viewer in a comfortable, seated position — almost as if they were lounging on the sofa or armchair shown in the scene — and makes it easier for them to immerse themselves in the image.


That’s why a scene rendered from this lower height feels more calming and reassuring compared to the same space viewed from a higher angle. For this reason, you’ll rarely see me placing the camera at full standing height in my renders, unless there’s a specific need or a direct request from the client.
From detail to overview
Focal length: what it is and how to choose the right one
As you’ve seen, this post is not only about natural light in interior renderings. It’s about creating images that are both beautiful and realistic (using only natural light). Realism often matters most, but what does “realistic” mean? A computer-generated image looks realistic when it resembles how we actually see the world.
One camera setting has a strong impact on realism is focal length. In a lens, focal length is the distance between the optical center (where light converges) and the sensor (the “chip” that records the image), measured in millimeters.

By default, a Corona Camera starts with a 35 mm focal length.

Adjusting it changes the field of view: longer focal lengths zoom in on details, shorter ones widen the frame.

Which focal length feels most realistic?
Scientifically speaking, we can compare it to the human field of view. Our vision covers about 180–190° horizontally, but we only see sharp detail in the central 40–45°. The rest is peripheral, more blurred.

There’s no strict boundary between central and peripheral vision, but focal lengths between 20/25 mm and 70/80 mm (70°–30° field of view) give a fairly human-like perspective. Shorter than 20 mm or longer than 80 mm can look unnatural, either by distorting space or flattening depth.
Beyond realism, lenses can create strong visual effects. Telephoto shots compress distances, like in Constantine Emmanouilidi’s photo of the “supermoon” behind the Temple of Poseidon.

Wide-angle or fisheye lenses, like Willem Jonkers’ images, exaggerate proportions and distort shapes.



So which focal length should you use?
For general views, a short focal length (20/25 mm) is almost necessary to capture the whole space. For closeups, longer ones (70/80 mm) work better. For medium shots, a “normal” lens around 50 mm is most effective.
What you should avoid is the reverse: using a short lens for closeups or a long lens for wide views. Short lenses expand space but distort proportions if you get too close. Long lenses give elegant proportions and focus attention on the subject, but they compress depth and reduce spatial dynamism.
Landscape vs Portrait
How to Choose the Best aspect ratio
In the previous part, I spoke about image types based on field of view: wide, medium, and closeup. We saw how focal length relates to these choices, but there’s another choice beginners often struggle with: aspect ratio.

An image is essentially a portion of our visual field framed within a rectangle. That rectangle can have different ratio between width and height.
If width and height are equal, the ratio is 1:1. If not, it’s landscape or portrait. In photography language, a horizontally oriented rectangle is called landscape (commonly used for wide subjects like scenery), with proportions such as 4:3, 3:2, or 16:9.

A vertically oriented rectangle is called portrait, more typical for subjects like people.


For wide views, landscape usually works best, since it allows the eye to explore both left and right. Personally, I like the 3:2 ratio, though that’s just preference. For medium shots or closeups, I often choose a portrait format, usually 3:4.
It’s not mandatory to follow standard proportions (4:3, 3:4, 3:2, 16:9). You can pick whichever ratio best suits the subject and composition of your image.
Why use different formats?
When creating multiple images of the same scene, they’re often shown together in a post or slideshow. If every image has the same format, viewers may lose interest quickly. Mixing formats helps keep the audience engaged.

Choosing landscape or portrait also guides the viewer’s gaze: landscape encourages a horizontal reading of the image, while portrait leads the eye vertically.
Finally, going for different proportions reflects a thoughtful approach to composition: framing the subject in the most fitting rectangle instead of defaulting to habit. Sticking to just one format means leaving these possibilities unexplored.
Depth of field in Closeups
From Realism to Storytelling
Now we know interior renders can be categorized as wide, medium, or closeup. We’ve covered focal length, light direction, perspective, and aspect ratio. Now, let’s focus on medium shots and especially closeups.
Viewers usually explore a series of images starting with a general overview and moving toward details. Sometimes, a striking closeup catches attention first, sparking curiosity about the rest of the series. While general shots provide context (size, style, light, color), closeups shift the focus to storytelling.

A key technical aspect in closeups is depth of field. This affects realism and the ability of the image to tell a story.

Real cameras cannot focus on everything at once; the photographer chooses what’s sharp and what’s blurred, adjusting the depth of field by changing the F-stop value.

Depth of field is the range in which objects appear in focus. Without it, a closeup shows everything sharp, reducing realism.


However, some images can appear fully sharp front to back. This happens when the aperture is small: the blur is minimal, making everything seem in focus. In wide shots, this is fine, as attention is on the overall view rather than details.

In closeups, however, the goal is to highlight a specific detail. Here, depth of field should be narrow, with strong blur on foreground or background to guide the viewer’s eye. Activating focus in closeups is essential for realism.
To get good depth of field, place the camera so there’s a foreground element to blur and a background far enough to get the right blur. The main subject must be unmistakable.

Choosing the correct aperture takes practice. Beginners often overdo the blur for effect, creating unnatural results. Experience and studying real photography show that subtle, controlled blur adds naturalness without overwhelming the image.
Soft vs Hard shadows
Scandinavian light vs. Mediterranean light
Most of the images in this post use soft shadows. Sun rays enter the room casting shadows with blurred edges. This choice greatly affects both realism and beauty in interior renders lit only by natural light.

You can control whether sunlight creates sharp or soft shadows by adjusting two settings in Corona Sun: Size and Intensity. [You can find these options even if you’re using different render engines (like V-Ray) they can have different names, but the logic is the same.]
Size defines the solar disk’s dimension (and shadow softness), ranging from 0 to 64. Values around 25–30 usually work well, but the best choice depends on the scene and composition. Experiment with different values (20, 40, 60), compare results, and select the one that feels most convincing.
Increasing Size makes shadows softer, as if filtered by clouds. In this case, it makes sense to reduce Intensity (to 0.2–0.5), producing gentler, less aggressive light on surfaces.
Soft light is especially suited to Scandinavian or Nordic-style interiors, or any scene rich in details and accessories, because it avoids adding distracting patterns or harsh contrasts. Sharper light works better in minimal, sparse interiors, where a single sunbeam crossing the space can enrich the atmosphere and add character. Strong, defined light also fits Mediterranean scenes, where bright summer sunlight is part of the cultural identity.
Over the years, most of my clients have preferred soft light for their renders, and in my own portfolio I’ve consistently chosen it as well. In the end, though, it remains a matter of personal taste.

And How to Add Them
Without Ruining your Render
We know that it’s perfectly legitimate to render an interior with completely (or almost) overexposed views outside. This approach actually simplifies post-production, because adding a background image, despite sounding easy, is not a trivial task. If not handled carefully, it can ruin all the work done up to that point.
That said, when it isn’t too complicated and doesn’t create distractions, adding a background can make the image much more engaging and complete. It provides context, tells us where we are, and allows the viewer’s eye to mentally dive deeper into the space.
There are several ways to insert a background visible through the windows of an interior:
1. Photoshop (Post-Production)
The simplest method is to open the render in Photoshop, mask out the exterior using the Alpha channel (or any other method you prefer), and add the landscape photo as a background layer. But this step alone isn’t enough. To achieve a good and correct result, you’ll need to:
- Use a high-resolution image
- Avoid photos that show objects too close or too far
- Ensure the perspective doesn’t conflict with the render’s perspective
- Match the focal length to the one used in the render
- Align the horizon of the photo with the 3D scene’s horizon
- Simulate the typical burnout of outdoor views seen from inside
That last step is often the hardest. Brightening the photo can be done in countless ways, but convincingly imitating the overexposure that would naturally occur when photographing an interior at high exposure isn’t straightforward. In the example below, I used a mix of two different photos, combined with multiple adjustment layers. The settings for these layers change every time, depending on the photo, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.




2. In-File 2D backgrounds
You can also place your photo as the main texture in a Physical Material and apply it to a plane with the same proportions, placed outside the room and perpendicular to the camera view. The same rules as before apply, but you won’t need to adjust exposure in post-production: the background will be automatically overexposed.

3. In-File 3D backgrounds
If you really want to challenge yourself, you can build an entire background (urban or natural) directly in 3D. This approach is much easier today than it was a few years ago, thanks to the availability of high-quality assets. You don’t need to look far: the Cosmos Browser offers plenty of 3D models of trees, buildings, and everything you need to create a portion of a city or a garden.




In the image above (made for a real estate agency in Rome), the garden was built entirely in 3D and as you can see it is not overexposed. This was possible because the interior exposure wasn’t as high as in other examples in this post, but more importantly, because the private garden was a key selling point of the apartment and had to be clearly visible (remember the BnB room with a view?).
Contrast and Realism
The Eyes Are the Best Reference
In a previous chapter of this post, I talked about the relationship between camera position and the direction of light, referencing Caravaggio and the extreme contrast in his paintings. Whether we look at a painting, a drawing, or any other kind of image, the sense of three-dimensionality comes mainly from light and shadow (chiaroscuro) and from contrast. When contrast is missing, or excessive, the image will look either flat or unpleasantly unreadable. This is why carefully controlling the balance between the brightness of lit areas and the darkness of shadows is a decisive step toward achieving realism in interior renders.
Take this image, for example.

It’s hard to call it beautiful. But why is it “objectively” bad? Because its contrast has been intentionally pushed to “inhuman” levels, meaning far beyond the range of contrast with which we normally perceive the real world through our eyes.
The best contrast is always the one that makes an image look as natural as possible. Think about it: realistic literally means “similar to how we see the real world with our own eyes”. Exposure, the balance between light and shadow, color saturation, the perceived distance between foreground and background, the width of our field of view, the softness of sun-cast shadows, even the strength of the blur affecting areas outside our focus, these are all things we experience daily. Yet we rarely pay attention to them with the purpose of memorizing their appearance and copying them in our renders.
When you walk down a street or along a mountain trail, when you wander through a museum, sit at home reading a book, or watch a sunbeam entering your room at sunset, the information you need to create a realistic image of that moment is already written in front of your eyes, free to read.
You just have to learn how to read it.
Bloom & Glare
They’re real, not just artistic
When you take a photo, especially backlit, around the brightest parts of the scene or light sources pointing at the camera you’ll see a glow, a brightness halo, that we call Bloom.

If you are using Corona, Bloom is not automatic, you have to turn it on inside the VFB settings. Once active, it needs fine-tuning so that it isn’t too strong or invisible. It should resemble what you see in real photography. That means studying real photos to observe how bloom behaves.


Bloom isn’t just something cameras do, it’s also part of how our eyes perceive light. It’s embedded in our visual memory of the world around us. Without it, your renders will feel less realistic.


Many beginners treat Bloom like a poetic touch, something to make a scene dreamy. And yes, it does add atmosphere. But it’s not just for show: it plays a big role in realism. No bloom, less realism.
Then there’s Glare, the partner of Bloom in Corona. Glare produces sharp streaks or flare around strong, point-like light sources (like bright lamps or headlights). In natural-light scenes without strong pinpoint lights, it usually makes more sense to disable Glare (just set it to zero), and instead rely solely on Bloom.
Using HDRI
Does It Always Give Better Results?
Many believe HDRIs are almost magical, capable of lighting any scene with ultra-realism. Sometimes that’s true, but not always.
HDRI maps work great for exteriors because the light comes from a real photo, giving natural tones and atmosphere. They’re also excellent when you want skies with special colors like sunsets, dramatic clouds, or even night scenes.
Studio HDRIs are also very useful in product visualization. Since they already contain the setup of a real studio, they can speed up the process a lot and generate rich reflections without having to build an entire environment around the product.
But in interiors, HDRI lighting usually adds very little (in my opinion). The light doesn’t enter the scene strongly enough, so the effect is minimal. Personally, I’ve almost never used HDRIs for interior renders, and when I did, the results weren’t much better. I’ve always preferred Corona Sun and Corona Sky.
Of course, it’s up to you to test and decide. Browse my portfolio if you want to see the results. For me, HDRIs make more sense in exteriors or product visualization but even there, I often prefer to stick with Corona’s classic lights.
